Frequently Asked Questions

What is the American Medical Writer Association?

The American Medical Writers Association, or AMWA, is North America's leading professional organization for medical communicators.

It is a nonprofit organization that provides education, resources, and networking opportunities to medical communicators.

What is a medical writer?

A medical writer is anyone who works in the many areas of medical communication. According to AMWA, "Medical communicators write, edit, or develop materials about medicine and health. They do this by gathering, organizing, interpreting, and presenting information in a manner appropriate for the target audience."

In addition to print media, medical writers may work in radio, television, computer/internet based media, and conference presentation materials. Read more about medical communication and the many areas in which medical communicators work here.

What are the benefits of AMWA membership?

The many benefits include an extensive education program and discounts on products and services. See the Membership Information page of the AMWA National site. You can join AMWA online here.

Does the Michigan Chapter have its own Bylaws?

Yes, you can find them here in a downloadable PDF.

How can I get involved with my chapter? Which meetings may I attend as a chapter member?

Michigan AMWA is always looking for volunteers, and volunteering is a great way to learn about the field, share what you've learned, and network with dedicated professional peers. Your input is valued at chapter meetings, and be sure to check this site often for news of special events.

As a member, you may attend all meetings of your chapter. You may also, as a member or nonmember, attend any chapter's regional conference or AMWA's Annual Conference. However, as a nonmember your registration fees will be higher.

If you live within our geographic area, you are automatically added to our chapter membership when you join the national organization. If you would like to learn more about our chapter, or if you would like to volunteer, please contact Dana Randall.
